Home delivery fabulous

As a kid, I remember walking down the hill to the store in Wyoming with a list in my hand. We didn't have much, so we spent carefully. Still, I usually had 5 cents to spend on candy or a comic.

Not much changed as I grew up. After getting married after college, Keith and I enjoyed going to the stores to check things out. We didn't have much then and looked more than purchased. Needs took precedent over wants. This included making purchases at the grocery store.

Time marched on. We raised our kids. We spoiled grandkids. Keith's health became as much a problem as mine. Getting around was much more difficult. During Covid lockdowns, friends often picked up essential items at the grocery store for us.

But we now had alternatives. We used them. Amazon became a favorite. But so did purchasing groceries online and having them delivered. For us that was Hy-Vee, though there are other alternatives in Kearney.

When our list gets longer than a very few items, I log onto the Hy-Vee website and order. They make it easy because they keep track of what I've already ordered, something that has gotten better over time.

I get to choose when and on which day for the groceries to be delivered. When the delivery arrives, I'm waiting. All I have to do is open the door and let the delivery person know where I want the groceries. In our case, on the kitchen counter.

When I order, I can add a tip for delivery. I try to be generous. I also thank the person who delivers the groceries. I am thankful we can have groceries delivered. But I also think of the person doing the delivering.

They deliver, like the mail, in all sorts of weather—sweltering hot to freezing cold. After all, this is Nebraska. The delivery service may be an extra way to earn money for some, for others, it might be a way to pay bills between jobs. Whatever the reason, it is not a fun job.

Those who deliver are persons who deserve to be thanked, deserve to be paid for what they do—lug heavy packages from store to car, from car to our homes. Those who've come into my home have been efficient and cheerful.

I am so going be generous in my thanks. I hope you will be, too.

I am thankful, that when we need it most, home delivery is a reality thanks to those who offer the service and for those who bring the deliveries to our door. Thanks.
