Forget the hype—read the bill

It isn’t that long ago, Nebraska voted on two different bills. One was offered by the pro-life movement and one by the pro-abortion movement.

I read through the pro-life offering and was a bit disappointed. As far as I read, the bill didn’t go far enough in protecting the innocent preborn children. My next problem was I saw holes that could be exploited by those who preferred an unlimited right to destroy these helpless innocents. I even hesitated in supporting the bill. Yet I knew sometimes it’s better to accept what you can get.

The other bill offered by the pro-abortion movement was gung-ho on getting government completely out of the abortion business altogether. They touted the importance of keeping abortion legal. Stories were told of women unable to get abortions that played on fear. The stories were just that—fiction. I checked. The real basis for their stories were quite different.

I also discovered as I talked to family and friends that both sides were sure what they believed about either position was reflected in the bill they preferred. Many, many never read the bills on the whole or in part. Each simply believed in the promotion. That bothered me. Neither side had any idea that, like me with the pro-life proposal, the bills didn’t fit the hype.

Many truly believe abortion should be allowed, but rare in actually. The abortion advocates glazed over a big point in the promotion. Getting government out of the abortion business sounds good. Right? But when those for abortion wanted it legalized, their drumbeat was that legalizing abortion would make it safer. Except where government passed basic sanitation and safety requirements, nothing changed. Women were being harmed physically and many died from the awful conditions.

Unlike what many are told, pro-life advocates care as much about the mother as the child. Most prolife centers offer practical assistance to mothers along with information and counseling.

But back-alley abortionists had not really changed much. They could now come into the light and legally promote their business. When the dreadful unsanitary conditions of some of these clinics came to light from government agencies, pro-lifers, and I was one, demanded oversight. We asked that basic sanitation standards be put in place such as sterilization of instruments between patients. Also a doctor, at least a certified nurse, should be required to be present.

Blame any number of persons and organizations for caring for the safety of women. When the pro-abortion crowd want government out of abortion business it means neither state nor local government agencies could dictate safe and sanitary conditions. All those protections would be stripped away. Is that what most who allow for abortions truly want? I don’t think so.

Most of the abortion bills allow babies to be torn apart in their mother’s womb up until birth. In some cases “prenatal” until birth is changed to “perinatal” until twenty-eight days AFTER birth.  Yes, this is infanticide. California has already passed this. Other states are seeking to follow. Some of these offensive bills have been defeated. Thankfully.

I did end up voting for the pro-life bill. But I read it and considered what it truly meant. If we the people are going to continue to have a voice, we must not take voting for a bill something to assume. Don’t assume hype is the whole picture. Please read and study before you vote.
