978-0-7459-6923-7 Lion Children's Books Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
THIS IS MY BIBLE takes the fundamental stories of the Bible from creation
to the the beginning of the church and summarizes them in a few key phrases. Some work better than others in this format,
but the stories retain most of the ideas and main messages.
Each short story is accompanied by a full-color illustration. THIS IS
MY BIBLE is a way to introduce key Bible stories before reading more of the story in the Bible and explaining God's message
of salvation and hope.
This padded board book is sturdy enough for that toddler to carry or,
more likely, drag it around, to look at and beg Mom, Dad, sibling or sitter to read it again and again.

Mr. Groundhog is tired of getting a bad reaction when he sees his
shadow. This year, he wants out of the job. He tries to convince his animal friends to take his place, but they each have
a reason why they cannot do his job. Like, rabbit busy working on Easter. Each presents Mr. Groundhog with a gift—vest,
top hat, cane, etc.
When time for his grand unveiling, Mr. Groundhog finds that a shadow
can be a reason to celebrate.
A fun story with large, anthropomorphic illustrations that make the
story come alive and the reader smile.
A fun way for parents and schools to introduce this fun tradition.

Jessie loses his ball in the tree that his Gramma doesn't want him
near. When he goes to family members for help, each has a solution he tries—throwing up a shoe to dislodge the ball,
using a broom. Every solution causes more things to be caught in the tree. Finally, Gramma has to be told. Jessie discovers
Gramma understands and shows him family is more important than her tree.
The story is told with a sense of timing and fun. The illustrations
in bright primary colors that focus on yellow, add to the humor and the warmth of close family. And there is even a lesson
about the importance of family and working together.
The English version is good. I liked the English/Spanish version
better. The English word is used first. The next time the word is used, it is in Spanish. This intermingling of the languages
offers a great and almost painless way to work on learning at both languages. I also appreciated the vocabulary list at the
back to help explain words used in both languages.
A story to read over and over.

When Harry goes to the barber, the barber cuts off way tooo much hair.
Harry refuses to go out in public without his hair so the barber rubs on some special hair tonic, then again. So begins a
wild story of Harry's hair that takes over the town and even does some good before the townspeople figure out how to get Harry's
runaway growth under control.
A rollicking, fun story in rhyme that leaves the reader with a smile.
Of course, parents will probably get tired of reading it over and over to the little ones who will love to follow the story,
point to the pictures...and giggle.
A story parents and kids can enjoy together.

THE BERENSTAIN BEARS AND THE GIFT OF COURAGE By Jan & Mike Berenstain ISBN
978-0-310-71256-5 Zonderkidz Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Sister Bear finds herself the focus of a big, bad bully that leaves her
feeling vulnerable and scared. What should she have done? How do you confront a bully?
Building on the Biblical story of David and Goliath, Brother and Sister
Bear learn a valuable lesson in real courage and in standing up for themselves and what is right.
Bullies are a fact of life at every age, but our children are particularly
vulnerable. They need to learn how to be victors not victims. Told with vivid text and colorful illustrations, THE BERENSTAIN
BEARS AND THE GIFT OF COURAGE is a start to helping our children learn about courage and where it comes from.
I've always liked THE BERENSTAIN BEARS books and this one is no exception.
MY PAL, VICTOR Text: Diane Gonzales Bertrand Illustrations: Robert

Two friends do all sorts of fun things together. Victor watches his friend
play baseball. The boys love telling stories and jokes. Love to swim. They are best of friends. In the end, we learn that
Victor is in a wheelchair, but the friends accept each other just the way they are.
The end is an unexpected twist. I had to reread the story from the beginning
to see why I didn't pick up on the disability from the active, colorful illustrations. Amazing how illustrations help keep
the focus on the fun, not any disability—not until that last picture.
With the focus on fun and friendship, the reader realizes that limitations
don't need to keep someone from enjoying life. An important thing for those without limitations to learn.

Stories from the Old and New Testaments give little ones a taste of the
stories of the Bible and their importance from Creation to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I loved the way the
Creation story was told, with the “At once there was light.”
Some of the Old Testaments stories omit the working of God in the stories,
but God is very present in the New Testaments stories. I was uneasy that Jesus was painted more as “friend” and
less of “God.” Nevertheless, the stories of MY FIRST STORY BIBLE are told in a way to draw in the reader, holding
them not only with lively text, but also with colorful, inviting illustrations.
MY FIRST STORY BIBLE will capture the attention of that little one, who
will demand “More please.”

Spring cleaning brings out the bears. Mom and Dad are busy with cleaning

Maybe, if they cleaned only the outside of their playhouse... Better yet, maybe they could take a break with the baseball
and bat they find.
But when Papa Bear finds out, the cubs have a lesson to learn about helping
and the value of work.
A lesson wrapped up with a fun story, loving parents and illustrations

with a Scriptural basis.

Teaching kids to say, “Please” or “Thank you,”

fail to get the point across. But, a book like the BENJAMIN BEAR STENCIL BOOK, which brings together individual picture books,

and colorful illustrations of Benjamin and his buddies, they “see” how the phrases make a difference.
Wish I could have had this book both when my kids were young and when
working with our grandkids.

The animals have a special place to vacation--a small outside swimming
hole. Nathan the hippo longs to be the lifeguard, but the other animals keep coming up with excuses. They don't want to tell
him, they worry about his size in the small pool. But when Nathan thinks a cub is drowning, he leaps into the pool. He grabs
the cub, but discovers he has displaced all the water and the swimming hole is now empty.
Sad, he walks away. Only the animals discover something exciting. The
displaced water, has turned into a stream leading into a lagoon that becomes the new swimming hole. This time Nathan finds
himself a local hero.
A fun story with a variety of animals and thoughts of summer vacation

Bible stories, some from the Old Testament, many from the new, stories
about Jesus and stories He told. The books starts with Noah building the Ark and ends with the resurrection. The text is appropriate
for toddlers with delightfully simple yet colorful illustrations that elicit smiles.
These stories can be a positive beginning to teaching our little ones
some key Bible stories as long as these stories are just the beginning. I say “the beginning” because sometimes
the very key meaning of a story was left out. Nevertheless, this is a positive and fun Bible story book for very young children.
The book and pages are sturdy and will take rough handling by those little ones who'll will want to point out every detail
and demand that you read this book, “just one more time.”

Too often these days our children do not learn classic stories from around
the world, stories that teach, stories with a moral or point and that is sad. However, TWO-MINUTE ANIMAL STORIES brings some
of these stories to today's children. TWO-MINUTE ANIMAL STORIES includes stories from the legendary Aesop, as well as stories
from such places as Africa, India, Palestine, Japan, Pakistan and even North America.
The stories are retold with sensitivity and a bit of humor, retold to
appeal to today's children with soft illustrations suitable to the subject matter. Stories deal with conflict and friendship,
selfishness and intelligence, consequences and arrogance, and more. Of course, the book retells the tortoise and hare story.

PUDDLE PEN BIBLE STORIES Text Juliet David Illustrations Stuart
Martin ISBN 978-0-8254-7394-4 Candle Books Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
This strong, board book will stand up to lots of loving and not-so-loving
use. Parents can read stories of Noah, Jonah, Daniel, catching fish and the missing sheep taken from the Bible and simplified
for those little ones. The stories are sweet and the pictures are busy and require more than a glance. Little ones will want
to explore all the things going on in the colorful illustrations.
Once the story has been read, the little ones can take the included water
pen and “color” the water pictures also included. As the child “paints” with water, the full color
picture is revealed. As the picture dries, it fades so the child can “paint” the picture over and over.
Interesting way to introduce some key Bible stories. A way to go to Scripture
for “the rest of the story.”
Note: Would have liked Scripture passages included as important points
of the stories are often not part of the text.
MY VERY FIRST EASTER Candle Bible for Toddlers Text Juliet David Illustrations
Helen Prole ISBN 978-0-8254-7415-6 Candle Books: Kregel Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
A first, very basic story about Jesus--what He did, that He died and
that He lived again told with colorful, child-like illustrations that bring a smile. The book is sturdy enough for the rough
wear and tear given books by toddlers just learning what books are all about and often like to drag, chew and otherwise destroy.
This book will stand up to some hard use.
If parents use the book as a kick-off point to explain the “rest
of the story,” I have few problems with it. Otherwise, the story as told in this book leaves out the whole reason
for Easter—that Jesus is God's Son, that He came to offer hope and salvation, that He was much more than a good man,
that He did it all for you and me.
A nice book that doesn't quite go far enough, though a book parents can
use to introduce Jesus to their little ones.

LOST SHEEP Text Julia David Illustrations Gemma Denham ISBN
978-0-8254-7430-9 Candle Books: Kregel Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Little ones love books, but those first books better be pretty sturdy
to withstand being bitten, dragged and thrown. Pages need to be firmly set and thick or be torn to shreds. LOST SHEEP is such
a book. The story of the lost sheep is told with pages that get larger then smaller. The differing sizes, as well as cut-outs
within the pages, add texture and interest to the book. The illustrations are colorful and a bit whimsical.
The shepherd loses one sheep among his hundred. Yet he cares enough to
search for that one lost sheep, not stopping until he rescues the one lost sheep. Little ones will like this book and probably
want it read over and over.
I was disappointed the point of this story was left out, that Jesus is
the good shepherd who so loves his sheep that even one lost sheep is important to Him.
A nice book that can be used to start a discussion about our shepherd
Jesus.

The adventurous mouse Rip, his sister Jesse and the kitten Abbey, are
ready for adventure, especially when their friend Euripides reads them a pirate story. When a treasure map falls from the
book, the friends gear up as pirates, even timid Abbey, and are off to find the treasure. Along the way they talk to other
animals and discover a treasure doesn't mean the same thing to everyone.
The treasure they find is even better than they hoped for and and the
discovery is just the beginning of adventures for the little friends.
The illustrations of the Rip and friends are adorable. (So much so, expect
the kids to want cute pets of their own.) The expressions on the faces are captivating and the story and illustrations draw
in the reader. While the story didn't meet my expectations for an ending, I doubt most kids will care. They'll want to read
(or have this read to them) over and over—and have a few pirate adventures of their own.

what is bigger, stronger, less work than his life as a stonecutter.
The story intersperses Spanish with English words and includes a dictionary

The end of the story came out of the blue and was a bit disconcerting,
with little hint to the ending as the stonecutter becomes a bit of all he'd wished for. However, the illustrations are captivating
and the story is a useful and fun teaching tool.

Hugo's Mama asks him to go to the store for soap. Along the way, Hugo

mother sent him to the store for. But even as he forgets, something always puts him back on track. By the time he returns
home, he is badly in need of a bath and soap.
I can relate as I'm sure lots of young children can. When I was pre-school
age, we lived across the street from the grocery store. This was a little town, in the fifties, where everyone knew and watched
out for one another. Mom sent me across the street for one thing. She probably sent me because she wasn't able to leave my
baby brother. Only there were fun puddles in the street from a recent rain and other distractions.
By the time I entered the store, for the life of me, I could not recall
what it was I was to buy. Not wanting to admit it, I started naming off all kinds of things, giving my mother a shock when
I brought it all home.
I loved this simple story with it's colorful illustrations. The author
captured a child's point of view perfectly. This was also a story that mixed English and Spanish helping the reader become
familiar with both languages. (My daughter-in-law loves books like this as she wants our grandchildren to know other languages,

GOD LOVES ME MORE THAN THAT Text by Dandi Daley Mackall Illustrated
by David Hohn ISBN 978-1-4000-7316-0 WaterBrook Press Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
I love losing myself in picture book illustrations and this book's
illustrations are no exception. The illustrations for GOD LOVES ME MORE THAN THAT give me that warm fuzzy of happiness and
security and is a perfect counterpoint to the text about God's love. The story is about a child asking about God's love--
is it big, wide, loud, etc., an expansion on Ephesians 3:17-19.
Ex. Tell me, please, is the Lord's love loud?
Louder than the cheering of a football crowd. Louder than a thunder-rumbling, storm-charged cloud. God loves me
louder than that.
If a child is wondering about God's love, this book is a great way to
show that God's love is a security that doesn't go away and is surely big, wide and enough.
A book to comfort both parents and kids.

Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Start with a faith concept and verse and teach those little ones not
only about God, but also how to read. This book does just that, combining Scripture with phonics in a colorfully illustrated
package, making the whole attractive and fun for parents and children alike. Though ideal for the homeschooling parent, any
Christian parent can use this book to introduce their pre-schooler to not only reading, but also the reading of God's Word.
I CAN READ GOD'S WORD makes clear the plan of salvation and other faith
and life basics in easy to comprehend terms.
The only hesitation I have lies in the final chapter. The author
translates the passage from Matthew 6:25-27 to mean everyone will always have enough food and clothing. (What about the children
who don't?) This is a very American way of looking at the verses. To
me the verses are more about trust than about specific promises.
However, parents can deal with this blip in an otherwise recommended
book.

The format of this book is simple, each chapter takes a topic such as

Inviting, colorful, three dimensional pop up book tells

and want to touch. (Though the book won't last long with rough handling.)
I love the dolphins that leap into the water as you move
the page. Some pages also have a tab that when moved adds even more movement to the page. There are also panels to lift that
uncover further interesting features.
While this retelling of the Biblical account of the flood
continues the usual assumption of only two of each animal (as opposed to the Bible account of two of the non-clean and seven
of the clean), this pop up book offers a fun way for parents to share an important Biblical story.

BIBLE STORIES FOR BEDTIME Text Terry Brown Illustrated by Doug Smith ISBN 1-59310-359-X Barbour
Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
A book with stories that take us from the beginning of the Bible through the death and resurrection
of Jesus Christ. All the stories are short, easy to comprehend and illustrated. They also include Key verses, God's Promise;
questions, Snuggle Session; and a prayer, My Prayer. This devotional is not only great for little kids, it would make a great
book to use for family devotions since each story also tells where the story is found in the Bible.
So often kids learn Bible stories, but don't understand them in context. This books puts Biblical
stories into the context of time. While I do wish stories about the flood included the truth that it was only some animals
that went in two by two, clean animals went in by sevens, that is a small failing in an otherwise exceptional book. I wish
I could use this for my Sunday School class.
CLOPPER AND THE NIGHT TRAVELERS
Text by Emily King Illustrations by Ed Olson ISBN
13: 978-08254-3066-4 Kregel Publications Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
The story of the
birth of Jesus is always a good one. It is a story that tugs on the heartstrings of both parents and children. At Christmas
time, it seems, parents are even more likely to read to their kids and what better story to read than the greatest story of
all—the story of Jesus.
This tale tells the true story from the viewpoint of a
fictional donkey, Clopper. We see the story unfold through his eyes. Unlike most Christmas stories, this one doesn't end at
the birth of our Savior. This book shows us the visits from the shepherds and later the Wisemen, the trip to the temple, the
escape to Egypt and the return to Judea to Nazareth. Through the story runs the thread that God took care of Jesus, Christ
the Lord, in very extraordinary ways.
The story includes passages from Scripture. I do have
some concerns about young children being able to differentiate between the fictional Clopper and the reality of the story
told. The story did feel a bit disconnected in some places where I had to go back and re-read the page before.
Nevertheless, the story was beautifully
illustrated and while the text is suitable for a young reader, the whole family can enjoy this story.
Peta wanted to play, but no one was available. Not even Mum.
Mum said she needed another set of hands to get all her work done. Then she could spend time with Peta. Peta went next door
to ask Mrs. Pitts about an extra set of hands. Mrs. Pitts comes up with the answer that helps both Peta and her Mum.
Colorful illustrations bring to life this positive story
of helping.

Sunburn is a big problem.
Parents, adults and kids are out under the sun without considering the long-term consequences and they can be severe. As a

has happened to friends of mine. A husband of a friend died from such cancer.

I do suggest the giver pull the tabs and slide the wheel several times before allowing the little one to do so him/herself

If as adults we sometimes wonder if God is with us no matter what, it shouldn’t surprise us that kids struggle
with the concepts that God is with us always and cares enough to watch out for us. Using a Panda Bear and his mom, the author

seas, fighting dragons and more as he inquires, “Would God be with me there?” and his mother’s loving, assuring
response, “God is always with you and he loves you like I do.”

shining his light. He is more interested in being liked by the boat flitting about in the sea. But when he attempts to act
like the ship, he discovers he hurts and frightens, his light is damaged and the ship never really was his friend. When a
storm moves in, the lighthouse must find his light again or the floundering ship will be lost.
A story about the importance of shining
our light. Though the story itself is not overtly “Christian,” the point behind the story as well as the end Note
to Parents make this clear, giving hints as to how to incorporate this into the Gospel story.
A cute story with charming illustrations
to draw both children and adults.
Harry was a dull, run-down house in a neighborhood
of colorful houses and he was sad. He was sad not just because he was a bit run-down, but because, unlike the other houses,
no family lived in Harry. Then one day a boy and his mom were looking for a house and Harry finally had a chance for a family.
That is, if his wild-life friends could spruce him up a bit.
A charming tale of friendship, family and
longing fulfilled.
WHEN GOD MADE THE ANIMALS
Text Jill Roman Lord
Illustrations Warner McGee
ISBN 1-59052-714-3
Multnomah Kidz $7.99
In bright, living color this sturdy board
book tells the story of God making the animals with the added fun of “googly eyes” of everything from a shark
to an elephant, eliciting a giggle from a child and a chuckle from the adult who, as much as the child, must shake the book
and make those eyes roll and clack.
This fun picture book concludes with the creation of Adam and Eve and includes the
Biblical passages, making this book a beginning, a entertaining beginning, to teaching children about creation and the God
of creation.
Bibleman®Returns in: TERMINATING THE TOXIC TONIC OF DISRESPECT
(DVD)
UPC 023755404596
Tommy Nelson $14.99
Bibleman and his sidekicks are on the scene from their mobile
command unit when tensions rise along with disrespect at a local ball park. Will they discover the source of discontent before
it is too late?
As an adult I found the live action a bit hokey and wondered
if younger kids would be able to follow the rather, to me, confusing flashbacks. However, my 4 and 6-year-old grandsons stayed
glued to the story and couldn't wait to take it home to watch over and over. After all, the story is geared for 6-10, not
adults as so many movies/videos purporting to be for kids really are.
I was delighted with the use of Scripture and Biblical principles
to solve problems. The sets and costumes are fun as well as colorful. Heroes and villains are clearly delineated, which is
also not always the case these days. Finally a hero you want your kids and grandkids
to emulate.
As my grandsons asked, "Can we get the next one?" Can't get
a better endorsement than that.
SIDNEY & NORMAN, A TALE OF TWO PIGS
By Phil Vischer
ISBN 1-4003-0834-8
Tommy Nelson $15.99
Norman had it all together and thought he was somebody. Nothing
quite worked for Sidney no matter how hard he tried. The two couldn’t be more dissimilar until they each received a
notice from God for an audience. Norman was ready to receive his just accolades while Sidney knew he was in BIG trouble. But
the meetings didn’t go as planned as each learned what God really wanted.
A story for adults and kids alike that gets a very important
lesson across that God loves us—just because and one has no right to lord it over another. The notes from the author
at the end drive home the point and leads us to grace.
A story that should be read and read again in every church,
Sunday School and home.

Being Truthful
This is a delightful CD filled with lively

that same need for a fun and educational method of imparting God's Word to a new generation.

the swing (el columpio), the slide and the dog (el perro) and duck, and… Of course after visiting all those places,
Elmo is hungry so he take us to the supermarket for his favorite foods—muffins, milk and macaroni.

THE ILLUSTRATED BIBLE: MATTHEW
ISBN 1-4003-0812-7
Tommy Nelson $6.99
I’ve read comic-style Bible stories,
but not actual Biblical text in an easy-to-read comic format that brings the Bible alive while, for the most part, preserving
the integrity of both language and message. The illustrations are colorful and well chosen to illuminate the text. (I do,
however, wonder if the size of the text will prove too small for some readers.)
Explanation footnotes are also included.
This expression of the Bible is a huge task, but if the book of Matthew is an example, the creators did a credible job, bringing
the Bible a new look, while preserving the sacred text, for a generation raised on video. But I see this as more than just
for kids. Adults who are not readers, adults new to English, adults who want an illustrated perspective will also find this
format useful. I’m looking forward to viewing other books and finally the whole Bible in this format.

Raven Tree Press LLC $16.95
When a neighbor offers to help her
plant a garden, the whole family gets involved. Throughout the growing season, she learns a lesson about hard work and friendship
as well as the satisfaction (and rewards) of a job well done.
A simple story told in both English
and Spanish with a short dictionary in the back. The story is embellished with soft Monet-like illustrations I wouldn't mind
framing.
A sweet, hope-filled story with many
subtle but profound messages of the joy of working together, the satisfaction found in working toward a goal, that the rewards
far outweigh effort expanded and that we must work to make our dreams a reality.

Hare bought a house with a huge lawn
of green grass, but while his neighbors, Skunk, Bobcat and Raven, work hard to keep up their lawns of clipped, perfect grass,
Hare relaxes and waits. His lawn dies, rain turns it into mud. His neighbors frown, but Hare knows just what he’s waiting
for. The outcome is one of color and fragrance that brings his neighbors together.
The book is filled with color and
colorful characters and the ending lifts the heart and makes me want to go out and start a wildflower garden.
While, at first, the book may appear
to reward laziness, the objective is quite different—valuing the beauty of our native plant and animal life. It is a
call back to what is really important for our environment and our lives. Beautifully done.

Bettina is at camp writing letters to her
aunt and uncle at the Antarctica. Aunt Tallulah keeps sending interesting gifts and when Bettina sends one in return, it saves

tidbits of life at camp and the South Pole. A book to read and read again.
Callie had read Cinderella. She KNEW what
happened to step-children when the father left for a trip. She expected to be relegated to servant status or even poisoned.
The behavior of her new step-mother, however, baffled her at every turn. Callie comes to realize that the bad parts of her
fairytales don’t always come true.
A warm, loving look at step-parenting from
the eyes of a child, in an easy-to-read chapter book format. Recommended for the new step-child.
All his life, Matthew listened to his father
tell him stories about a magical money tree, the riches of which would be available to the one who discovered it. The stories
fueled Matthew’s imagination, and he searched for the tree as he carried his father’s green bag that he used to
carry the firewood he found in the forest. One day, he used the bag’s straps to save a man from drowning and then shared
his lunch. That day, Matthew also discovered the money tree. But after stuffing the bag with the money, Matthew had second
thoughts.
Matthew learns that happiness comes from
things more important than money.
A well-written, colorfully illustrated
morality tale that joins the ranks of stories that should be treasured and passed on.
Gramma sends Owen on the
path home to his waiting father. Several things along the way confuse or cause him to stumble, but she’s sent along
a book to help him find his way.
While to an adult this book
comes across as an allegory for our walk to the arms of our Heavenly Father, a child sees this as an adventure that teaches
God’s love, care and protection. The family relationships are warm and inviting, the adventure just scary enough to
hold the reader’s interest and send a delicious tingle down the spine of the child, the journey propels one to read
on, and the faith message leaves comfort and love. The illustrations are colorful and child-like, appropriate to the target
audience.
The touching story, the subtle
message and the colorful illustrations makes this a book to read and re-read in the warmth of family and faith.
The unique format for this sturdy board book adds to the
fun of reading the rhyming story of a family of bunnies preparing for night as God “Tucks in the Day.” A delightfully
sweet book that might just encourage the little ones to hurry to bed to hear the story “one more time.”

Max Lucado
ISBN 1400307341
Tommy Nelson $14.99
Stanley is afraid to go to
camp, because he stinks. He wonders why God made him that way when it drives everyone a way. Sure enough, at camp, it is hard
for the other bugs & insects to get close when Stanley lets off an odor that knocks them out.
While others learn to accept
Stanley as he is, Stanley learns why God made him as he is and how fear makes it worse. But when the camp is threatened by
a bully frog, it is Stanley’s special ability that saves them.
An entertaining story on
friendship, acceptance and how God really does know what He’s doing when he makes each of us unique and special. This
colorful “bug-filled” video combines the gentle interaction of an adult (as in Mr. Rogers) with artful animation
(as in Disney). The voices of Tim Conway & Don Knotts add a touch of humor as it brings the characters to life.
Does God have
a job? Yes, answers a dad to his inquisitive daughter, He is an engineer, a landlord, a teacher, a writer, a farmer and many
other things, ending with God is a Daddy. This beautifully illustrated book leads us to the heart of God as it shows us all
the ways He takes care of and provides for us. A book a child will want to read over and over as the message is one of love,
hope and assurance. Wonderfully done.

Fast, fun rhyme of
Daniel’s story of the Lion’s Den, with a king who likes to eat and Z & H, jealous of Daniel’s position
of favor, who trick the king. The rhymes are lively and the illustrations vibrant with a story focusing on doing what’s

HORNED AVENGER:
THE BATTLE AGAINST VON BOREDOM
Tommy Nelson
G
This new, bright
and colorful animated feature tells the tale of Von Boredom who is turning everyone into his boring one-dimensional, colorless
minions. The Horned Avenger, who has the power to create reality from his creative drawings, has been created to save the
planet from Von Boredom's evil plot. .
When the Horned
Avenger rescues a little girl, the battle of wits and manipulation are joined. Will the Horned Avenger, his sidekick and the
girl be able to outwit Von Boredom and save the world?
I first watched
this with my grandkids: almost two-year-old Tori, almost four-year-old Dane and 5 1/2 year-old Devon. Tori was rather oblivious,
but the boys enjoyed not only the feature, but also the "extras" on the DVD--game, how to draw, other scenes, etc.
A week later,
that was the first DVD they choose to watch when they visited.
Adults may find
the plot simplistic, though there are amusing lines of dialogue thrown out with references only someone older would catch.
Scriptural references are also used, though only one versed in the Bible would realize the origin of the usage.
The packaging
says from 6-10, but marketing might also aim for a younger audience--or teens who like "camp." (Older teens love Veggie Tales.)
With positive
values focusing on using creativity and imagination, THE HORNED AVENGER provides parents an interesting addition to their
collection of acceptable DVDs.
When Josh and his sister
Emily rescue the goldfish Gertie in a toy store accident, they had no idea how their act of kindness would change their lives.
All they knew was that they wanted Gertie for Christmas. That is until their school mates laughed at their choice of gift.
But when their wish comes true, they discover that Gertie enriches their lives in ways they never thought possible as she
teaches them about being thankful.
This is a book that bridges Thanksgiving and Christmas. The whimsical
illustrations caught my eye, but the easy, fun-to-read text and the underlying truth held my attention. I loved this story
with its delightful characters drawn with a loving hand. This book brings us back to the heart of Christmas—gratitude
and Christ. This could be a favorite this Christmas. A winner.

This thin book holds a whole
world of activity from the giant fold-out poster with large colorful stickers, to suggestions after suggestion for activities
such as making Christmas cards, and playing Christmas Alphabet to putting together a Christmas stable.
All the activities serve
one purpose--to enhance the simply told story of baby Jesus coming to earth. The story is told under headings so the suspense
can be played out as an adult reads only part of the story, finishing on Christmas.
This book is very interactive and a great way to introduce

The reindeer are ill and
Santa can’t make his Christmas run—until his faithful mutt has an idea. Why can’t dogs pull the sleigh?
So begins a delightful tale of how the animals, and not only the canine variety, work together to get Santa on his way.
Told in a fashion similar
to Night Before Christmas, the story sparkles with the love and cheer and good will that makes the Christmas holiday so special.
The author even manages to sneak in messages of working together for the good of all and taking care of all God’s creatures,
while making the reader both laugh and wipe a tear. The illustrations are bright and colorful with a touch of poignancy that
enhances the story.
Dog lovers, animal lovers, will love this tale told with
such love. Parents will appreciate a story with no dreadful, scary villain or violence. CHRISTMAS TALES makes a wonderful
addition to the Night Before Christmas, Who knows, one day, maybe it will be just as remembered.
Mr. Peters and his dog Joey,
wearing matching scarves, had a regular walking routine. Mr. Peters walked Joey around the neighborhood twice a day, stopping
at the bus stop to chat. One day he discovered that Miss Kelsey, who worked at the church foster care center, was worried
because the children didn’t have winter clothes like hats and scarves and mittens.
That got Mr. Peters thinking.
Others noticed he was distracted and didn’t linger on his walk any longer, until the day he handed Miss Kelsey a shopping
bag filled with scarves and mittens he’d knitted for the children.
A sweet story of kindness
with illustrations reminiscent of my own childhood.
Change is strange and the
birth of a sibling is very strange and scary for a little kid. A kid wonders if the new baby will take his/her place, if mommy
and daddy with still love and spend time with him/her, if mommy will be ok. After the birth, a kid may get tired of a baby
that isn’t any fun and a mother too tired to play any more—at least for a while.
WE’RE HAVING A BABY
tackles the questions and problems of a new little one in the family with both truth and humor. The cartoon illustrations
are both colorful and fun.
An excellent tool for parents
to use to introduce a child to the wonders and reality of a new baby in the family.
A pacifier may be comforting,
but the time comes when a little one needs to give it up. It isn’t always easy. NO MORE PACIFIER is the story of giving
up a pacifier. It deals with the reasons to do so and the difficulties. It also shows how it is possible and how doing so
is a step to growing up.
The illustrations made me
laugh and the story was so practical, yet fun, that I wished I’d had this book when my son was little. He loved his
pacifier. When his sister was born, he kept trying to stick one in her mouth (he no longer used one, but remembered how important
it was to him). She hated pacifiers and kept spitting it out. Our son learned another lesson: not all kids needed them.
For those who do, this practical, fun book offers a way
for parent to help a child get over the NO MORE PACIFIER hurdle.
This thick, colorful spiral
calendar book offers a whole year of fun and challenging activities for kids ages 6-9. Activities include mazes, write in
speech balloons, drawing, coloring, find differences in pictures, find mistakes, dot-to-dot, putting pictures in sequence,
complete pictures and more. Some are quite challenging.
The activities line up with
Bible stories starting with Adam and Eve and progressing through the Bible to the New Testament. Many of the days center on
Jesus, His miracles, stories and teachings as well as His birth, death and resurrection. Scripture passages are listed for
each day that can be used to explain the story more completely and can be used as devotions for the day.
Parents and families
can use this book together or to keep kids occupied. Kids can be given their own copy and be encouraged to begin their own
daily devotions.
So what happens when you
give a girl a Bible? Why she might want you to read it to her and it may inspire her to
(Example from the book) Leaning
how God took care of Noah’s family and animals may inspire her to open a pet hospital in your kitchen.
This colorful and humorous
story about what happens when you give a girl a Bible has a serious message that she’ll not only learn about Jesus and
about kindness, but may also share what she’s learned with a friend and want to give her a Bible, too.
This book makes a positive introduction to giving a Bible and
learning about Jesus. Definitely one to read together as parent and child.
Josefina was a Javelina who
lived in the desert. While her brothers liked to eat all day, Josefina had a dream. She wanted to be a ballerina. Wanted her
name in lights and her fur in tights. She didn’t fit in even at the local Oasis Snack Bar where her brothers liked to
rock and roll, crickets fiddled, toads croaked and bunnies hip-hopped. But they had no ballerinas.
Then she heard from her cousin
Angelina in Pasadena—Hollywood—and off Josefina headed to make her mark. So goes the story of how Josefina was
both rejected and accepted in California only to realize she missed her home and friends. Josefina’s dream does come
true, just not in the way she always imagined. Her dream, she finds, needs to include her friends, family and home.
Unique characters that give
us a glimpse of life in the Southwest. Action-rich illustrations bring a smile and the story rhyme is fun to read. Another
winner from Rising Moon.
This is one of a series of
books that adults can buy for children that incorporates information about the child starting with name to give the story
a personal feeling. But this book, like the others in the series, is more than a simple story. These are stories with a purpose
to assist a little one through some difficult real-life changes. In this case, that scary first day of school.
The hardback book is bright
with primary colors that sparkle and a story that deals with fears and questions all kids have at venturing away from home
to that big building with lots of kids. The book concludes with parenting tips to help ease the little one into this new situation.
Another in the
series of change books that helps kids deal with changes in their lives that can be scary. It is also another book that can
be personalized. This one deals with the big change, the scary situation when mommy and daddy leave for a trip without the
little one.
It could also be used when
the little one visits Gramma for a few days.
This story takes the sting
out of the separation, helping the little one see the good things and realizing mommy and daddy are coming home again. Especially
when personalized, this book can be used to ease fears, answer questions and be a fun and colorful way to stay connected.
If parents are going on a trip more than overnight, this
book is a great way to ease into it and comfort during separation.

True to his style, author Max Lucado weaves a fairy-tale story
with threads of truth, completing a work of art, enhanced by Tristen Elwell’s colorful and definitive illustrations.
Along with a child’s longing for the unknown, and a desire
for experience, Lucado includes consequences, cost, and a father’s love and willingness to pay the price to show his
child the way home.
A story of hope, THE WAY HOME: A PRINCESS STORY reaches for the
prodigal, for the would-be prodigal, and for those who await a return. As with
other Lucado books, THE WAY HOME is suitable for a broad audience: children, teen, and adult.
Patch the Porcupine could fix anything, and he loved helping out his friends. A help wanted sign prompts
him to take a job at the bicycle shop where his skills really come in handy, until Patch discovers one big problem that he
doesn’t know how to fix. If he can’t figure out a way to keep his spines from blowing tires, he’ll lose
his job. Will he discover a solution?
This is a very upbeat, fun story with a can-do attitude that also offers practical step-by-step advice
of how to fix a flat bike tire. The colorful illustrations caught the light-hearted, optimistic spirit of the story, bringing
the likable characters to life.
A story any child would enjoy and a story a parent can use as a teaching moment about dealing with
problems and frustrations with a positive attitude.
MR. GEORGE AND THE RED HAT
(2004 Children’s Book of the Year Award Finalist by ForeWord Magazine)
Mr. George the squirrel finds
a doll's hat and finds it useful for holding nuts or wearing or for other things. He likes his hat, but when a mother bird
needs a place for a nest, he willingly gives it up.
In this age of me first,
we don’t see many books about self-sacrifice and the joy it brings. This beautifully written and illustrated story resurrects
the value of helping others and the feelings of satisfaction it brings. The illustrations could easily be framed and hung
on the wall, drawing the viewer into the soft, resonances of the park home of the animals.
Debra Pollack’s MAGIC
COLORS book, illustrated by “The Wiz,” is a work of simple rhyme with instructional tasks (“find the yellow
suns” and “find the orange fruit,” etc.). A 16-page booklet, Pollack’s work provides parents or siblings
an easy task of teaching and reinforcing color identification.
The text itself is formatted
in all “caps,” rather than upper and lower-case font. The tie-in of color with “magic” is questionable
from this reader’s perspective. Strictly for use in color instruction and simple rhyming pattern, the book would be
effective.
Some kids want so much to be part of the crowd they end up agreeing to actions that they do not like
and that make them feel bad about themselves. In this re-telling of the Daniel and the Lion’s Den story, one of the

Daniel is thrown in the pit and he hears God speaking to him
The illustrations captivate and the text pulls the reader into the story. Parents are given suggestions
as to how best to use the book and are given discussion questions. This is a different way to approach this problem in a non-threatening
fashion.
It can help equip a child to stand up and can be a lead-in for parents (or other adults) to share
the true Biblical story. (And explain the difference between real and make believe built on something basically true.)
This alphabet book rises
from America’s Southwest environment with stunning photos and simple but informative text that acquaint us with Native
Americans, the pensive coyote, the giant Saguaro cactus, the Pueblo, the owl and so much more.
Each letter helps us better
understand the wonders of the Southwest.
Example: D is for Dune
Like rippled white snow,
huge mounds of sand form dunes at White Sands National Monument. The dunes are always on the move as strong winds blow the
sparkly crystals up one side and w-h-o-o-s-h-! down the other.
Warning for young-earth creationists.
There is a couple of references to millions of years ago, but these are easily changed to simply “very old.” These
should not keep anyone from purchasing this beautifully, carefully-crafted alphabet book. An alphabet book worth a look from
adults as well as the younger set.
Raven likes to fly, sit in
trees and eat berries and worms. Food is not easy to come by in the drought situation. When Raven discovers a man of God hungry
and all alone, she found herself compelled to provide and did.
The story of God’s
provision for Elijah is told with colorful illustrations and a Raven the little one can’t help but like. Easy to read
and fun story with a message of God’s provision in time of need.
A bright, colorful and fun
board book that takes the reader on a journey though an animal park.
Example: Well, kids, here
we are in the park.
Let’s see what animals
we can spot.
As we read through the story,
we look for all sorts of wild creatures from bears to owls. Each page gives us further opportunities to try and “spot”
the wild creature and count how many are on the page. Glow in the dark eye stickers are also included to be added for fun
on this family camping trip.
A great way to introduce
little ones to God’s creatures and to encourage them to “discover” the different animals and count them.
It would also give adults an opportunity to use the book as a door to introduce more information about these animals.
A book for families, libraries,
churches and schools.
This board book will take lots of
punishment from the little one just starting to listen to books. It makes a nice starter book and a fun beginning counting
book. Set in the Southwest, the main character is a coyote that must hide from a one big rattlesnake, teases 2 butterflies
and so forth. The illustrations are rich, colorful and as bright as the Southwest sun. The simple text and fun illustrations
complement one another, offering an entertaining and educational and unique counting book.
Not every day a baby
board book has a gecko as the main character. This gecko is a true gecko of the Southwest. While the simple, clear text helps
the little one learn colors, the rich illustrations ties those colors with the terrain—land, sky and fauna--of the Southwest.
This book just might prompt families to plan a vacation. This book makes the gecko one cool character. Fun for both the adult
who reads this book and the child with whom it is shared.
This retelling of the rabbit
and the tortoise story adds a Southwestern flavor with a roadrunner (to mark the course, of course) a rattlesnake to draw
the sssstarting line, not to mention a buzzard, an eagle, a coyote and more. The old, wise tortoise challenges the upstart
young jackrabbit. Of course, the rabbit takes off like a shot while the tortoise makes her tortuous journey. We hear the sounds
scritch-scratch, “see” the giant saguaro (with pronunciation sa WA ro), pass the many creatures and fauna native
to the land.
This story includes obstacles
not in the original story, such as a vehicle that almost runs tortoise down. The story ends with the tortoise winning as the
jackrabbit sleeps, but the note at the ends gives us the true purpose of the book—to make us aware of how fragile the
population of both the tortoise and the jackrabbit really is and a simple encouragement for each of us to consider the need
to preserve the wild desert for both animals and people to enjoy.
A delightful and informative tale. This
version makes the classic truly American.
Learn about frogs
in the palace and the donkey who spoke. Feel the frog's bumpy skin and the donkey's bristly mane.
Little ones learn
lessons of God's protection, patience and provision as they hear the stories read of Balaam, Elijah, Daniel and Jonah, as
they view the colorful illustrations and as they feel the lion's mane, touch the whale's tail, feel the bird's beak and more.
The Biblical
references allow the adult to go to the Bible for "the rest of the story."
A fun method to introduce
both well and lesser known Biblical stories that uses sight, sound and touch.
As Hodgson points out in
the beginning, kids are curious. They wonder what prayer is all about and what difference it makes to them. This book explains
by showing first how a Biblical character prayed, then how that applies to today.
Example:
Jonah was swallowed by a
big fish
And talked to God about his
trouble. (Jonah 2:1-2
You can pray when you are
in trouble, too.
This book unravels the mystery
of prayer, bringing it down to a level everyone can understand.
The point is made that how
we pray, the position we pray in—standing or kneeling—God hears. We can pray anytime and any place. Excellent
introduction to prayer.
Embossed illustrations enhance
the telling of these fiery stories from the flaming sword that sent Adam and Eve from the garden to the fiery chariot that
whisked Elijah into heaven. Each retelling is a short, yet accurate portrayal of the story, with the Biblical reference given,
along with an illustration that draws the eye and paints a vivid picture in the mind.
The kid-friendly stories
and high-impact illustrations make a great beginning for devotional time either with family or at bedtime.
Read about the momma cat
who learns things aren’t always what they seem and that looks aren’t the whole picture. Based on Phil. 2:3b, the
first story “The Cat who Smelled like Cabbage” gives us a glimpse of snobbery and kindness, easily translated
to our world.
The second story “The
Duck who Quacked Bubbles” based on Phil. 2:14-15, draws us into a world of different ducklings, one that complains about
everything until he almost loses his family.
A note to parents and teachers
after each story offers further information, questions and helps.
Accompanied by vivid pictures,
these stories paint a picture that helps adults and children a like deal with prejudice, complaining and tolerance in a non-threatening
fashion. The stories are reminiscent of stories I read and loved as a child.
This picture book tells the
story of Saul and how he went from persecuting Christians to becoming a missionary for Jesus. This book has more than the
usual couple words per page and would qualify as a first reader for those who are beyond most picture books in reading ability.
The story is well told and
has surprising depth for a book meant for the younger set. Both children and adults get a solid handle on Paul’s life
and what changed him from hating those who loved Jesus, to one who loved others instead of hating them.
The colorful illustrations
add depth to the re-telling of Saul/Paul’s incredible story. Can’t wait to introduce this one to my grandkids.
This fat little
mini-book will fit nicely in a purse or bag to bring along when visiting or traveling, yet provide lots of entertainment,
Biblical knowledge and concepts, and fun learning activities such as counting, rhyming and finishing the phrase.
The book has
stories of creation, Moses, David, Jesus and much more. Each story includes the basic truth taught, where the story can be
found in Scripture, and suggestions for making the story more entertaining.
Colorful, and
at times, subtly humorous illustrations draw in the reader offering opportunities for counting, questions and more.
This small book makes a BIG
gift for that little one on your list.
Princess and her father go
on a hike as only a parent and child can with all the wit, color and questions of growing up.
Example: Daddy, what do princesses
wear on a hike?
As long as it's sensible,
they wear what they like.
This is a fun romp through
trees and fields, down lanes and away from bees. The illustrations and text are upbeat and fun with a bit of information thrown
with the bouncy rhymes. There is a fun frame for the "owners" picture and an invitation to a scavenger hunt at the end.
Fun to read aloud for both
parent and child. A book a child will probably enjoy over and over and over, well, you get the picture.
What do five
Bible stories and five puzzles add up to? Learning and fun.
Parents can not
only read the Bible stories while the little one(s) put the accompanying puzzles together, they can also use the Scripture
passages for the stories to relate the story directly back to the Bible.
Kids learn about
Jesus healing the sick, stopping a storm, feeding the crowd and more. The 9 piece puzzles enhance the stories.
A book the young family can use over and
over. Fun introduction to basic Bible stories.
The pilgrim Christian
longs to be free of the burden on his back, but there seems to be no hope until Evangelist points him toward a shining gate.
His wife and friends ridicule, but desperation drives Christian to find relief, and he heads toward the gate, the cross and
the Celestial City.
Along the way
companions both help and hinder his journey.
This retelling
of Bunyan's classic is done with care to the original story, but re-worked for a younger and more contemporary reader. The
illustrations draw in the reader and compliment the text.
Parents can use
it to introduce the original to their older kids.
This book should have a place in the Christian family's library.

EFFIE'S IMAGE
was selected by Learning Magazine as one of the winners in their 2006 Teachers' Choice Award for Children's Books program,
and it is an Honor Book in the Children's category in the 2006 Nebraska's Center for the Book Award Program.
One morning Effie
wakes up and compares a picture of herself in her prime with the image in the mirror and wants to hide away. She feels useless.
Only, neighborhood
girl Amanda refuses to let Effie give up. Amanda pushes Effie to try one thing after another from caring for her cat to helping
in the church office. But nothing seems a "fit," leaving 82 year old Effie feeling more useless than ever--until Amanda takes
Effie to school.
This is a sensitively
told story of lost and found acceptance and self-esteem through not only usefulness, but through the love and acceptance of
others.
Underscored with soft but rich illustrations,
this story engages the reader drawing one back again and again. A beautifully told story for all generations.
What do Southwest critters do when Mamma says, "It's time for bed?" So begins a journey
of desert critters avoiding bedtime--just like some little kids. From what not to do to snuggling up, this easy-to-read story
offers a glimpse of Southwest inhabitants (which parents can use to teach about animals) and a fun go-to-bed story that kids
will want read over and over.
Who knows, those little ones might even learn to go to bed without so much hassle if you
promise to read this fun story--one more time.
This book tells simplified stories of Moses, Daniel, David, Noah, Joshua and Jesus with
an accompanying pictures of before and after with the pull of a tab.
An interesting and fun way to introduce little ones to important Bible stories.
Though there have been many books with prayers for children, this one made me smile with
the up-beat style and joy that reverberates from them. Colorful illustrations add to the sense that talking to God doesn't
have to be somber and sober. It brings joy.
EXAMPLE: Hooray for God!
Dear God,
I like praising You.
I like singing to You
at the top of my voice!
Thank You for everything!
Amen.
This book can help your little ones begin a habit of both prayer
and praise. A valuable addition to devotional
moments.
This is one book I plan to give my oldest grandson. Along with his parents, he'll have fun doing all the activities
in this book and may never even realize he's learning Bible stories along the way.
Help Noah build his ark. Join Abraham on his journey to the Promised Land and follow Joseph to Egypt. Be with Moses
when he receives the Ten Commandments and with Samuel as he hears God voice in the night. Be with David as he fights Goliath,
Solomon building the Temple and be in on Jonah's adventure with the big fish.
This book is packed with lots of fun activities along with stories told in an adventure style. Great for an older youngster
to do alone, for family times or classroom use.
This colorful and fun story may give your boys ideas, so watch out.
Example: If you give a boy a Bible…
He may you to read it to him….
When you get to a story with a fight scene…
He may want to act it out.
The story is fun, but with a serious purpose. The idea is that as you read the book, you'll encourage your child to
want to know the Bible stories. Once he knows them, he may share them and end up wanting to give a Bible to a friend.
Interesting concept story that may encourage not only the boy, but the parent to get into the Word and pass it on.
Compelling illustrations and text draw the reader into this powerful book based on the questions Job asked God. Very
kid-friendly, this book leads into the most important truth of God as creator and sustainer who loves you and me.
Example: Who has explored the springs where the sea bubbles out? Who has walked around the deepest part of the ocean,
looking in the caves and churning up the sand?
Many adults skip the book of Job. This book brings many of Job's questions down to a level that may encourage adults,
as they read to their children, to open their Bibles to discover the wisdom of Job.
A beautifully written and illustrated book that should have a special place in a child's library.
Duncan the donkey feels lower than low. All his friends, the horse, the camel, even the ox have jobs using their special
gifts, but why did God create him to be so useless? So begins the tale of Duncan the donkey who wants a special job like his
friends. But what can he do?
When Jesus sends his disciples on a special mission, Duncan finds he has a most important job—carrying the king
into Jerusalem. He isn't useless and God had a plan and purpose for him after all.
The story not only teaches about Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, but also about God's timing and plan for each life. Duncan's
story gives parents the opportunity to help their children realize they, too, have special gifts and talents.
Well illustrated, fun story of God's purposes and timing.
A colorfully illustrated,
textured board book that tells the story of the shepherds from the viewpoint of a new little shepherd boy. Glitter adds pizzazz
to this sweet story. It is also a story of sacrifice as the little shepherd gives his lamb to the new born Jesus.
A fun way to introduce the
Christmas story to your little ones.
Ever wondered about the excitement
of the angels as they waited the birth of Jesus? Goyer portrays that excitement as the angels wait a stage debut, wait to
reveal the news to the shepherds with the countdown 10, 9, 8… minutes to showtime. The illustrations are colorful and
fun and filled with the excitement of this great event.
The count down
can assist parents in helping a little one with counting, and what better to count down than to Jesus’ birth. The book
is a fun starting point for the retelling of the birth of Jesus.
Caleb is scared. He doesn’t want to leave what is familiar for the unknown. Besides, how can God use him, he’s
just a camel? But when a Wiseman picks him for the journey to find the newborn king, Caleb finds that by trusting in God’s
guidance, he could make it through even scary things. This story combines sweet pictures and a fun story wrapped around the
birth of Jesus to show little ones that God can use them even when they are afraid. The section at the end assists parents
in using the story for teaching moments.
Short, age-appropriate stories
draw the reader into the lives of the Kenton family as they meet the many things life throws their way. Organized around the
seasons in 52 units, this book explores the many issues that we face every day from having a bad day at school or stealing
to prayer and death. For a family with younger children, this would be a way to initiate family devotions. Older children
can use the book to begin their own habit of daily devotions.
But this book
is more than a Bible story with a contemporary application, though it has that. It also includes questions, memory verse,
a prayer and activities at the end of each unit/story as well as a topical index to help parents explore specific issues.
Recommended for families.
A book, a stuffed toy all in one. The pages open over the tummy area with simple pictures and one to a few word text
that can be used to help you tell the story to your little one.
The toy can be taken any place, including the bath. A fun and educational toy.
Children view things very
differently from adults. Often it is hard for parents to answer questions on a child’s level. This author does. At a
time kids are bombarded with the idea that life is random and purposeless, Hodgson helps us all see that we are fearfully
and wonderfully made. Jared wonders about how God made him. As he explores the world around him and asks questions, he comes
to some surprising conclusions. A book filled with whimsical illustrations and a timeless message told in a way to make this
a favorite.
This is another
book of wonder from Hodgson. This time as Jared explores his world, he helps the reader grow in their understanding and appreciation
of God and His creation. The tone and illustrations provide a fun backdrop for the truths taught—through the eyes of
a child. A winner for parents and kids alike.
When Matt receives a video
game for his birthday he has no idea how it will take over his life or the decisions it will force him to make. This colorfully
illustrated book told in fun rhyme deals with an important issue of priorities. This is a book both parents and kids can use
to help keep things in perspective.
While this book deals with the problem
of addiction to a video game, as the book points out, anything that we put before God and other priorities is wrong. Some
things just need to be kept in balance.
A book, a stuffed
toy all in one. The pages open over the tummy area with simple pictures and one to a few word text that can be used to help
you tell the story to your little one.
The toy can be taken anyplace,
including the bath. A fun and educational toy.
This is a first book
for that little one that tells the story of the lost sheep for toddlers. With a simple story and colorful illustrations, this
sturdy board book will stand up to many, many readings and hard usage. Also a fun way to introduce that little one to the
story of the Good Shepherd.
THE AMAZING JOURNEY OF NOAH AND HIS INCREDIBLE ARK
Fun, colorful pictures illustrate this board book, which
retells the story of Noah and is suitable for even the most active toddler. The book comes with four wooden toy animals that
match the illustrations and adds a bit of “hands-on” to the story. While the story takes a couple of liberties
with the story, parents can use the book as an introduction to the Biblical story of Noah.
This richly illustrated
two-sided flip book tells a story of adoption from two sides--the adoptive parents and the sweet oriental orphan girls.
Two inter-related stories
for the price of one book. The stories are simple and easily understood, as is the explanation of being adopted into God's
family.
This is a good story for
families to share, especially if someone within the family has been adopted, and even more so if it was a foreign adoption.
When Erik has to stay overnight with
his cousin Sloan, he faces the many fears that assail him--from a big dog to eating pig slop--by hesitantly turning to God
for help. His question, "Is this faith?"
Using the helps at the end of the story,
an adult can help a child learn what faith really means and how to differentiate between real and imagined fears.
Honey's grandmother is losing her hair
due to cancer treatment, but this is a day for them to remember. For those dealing with illness in the family and those who
just need to remember that God is bigger and more wonderful than we can imagine, this moving, beautifully illustrated book
opens a world of opportunity to grow closer as you discuss the issues of life and wonder. A book to read and re-read.
As Temba, an African boy, climbs, takes
care of the family goats, and interacts with his family and his world, he begins to question different family members about
God. Their answers are both simple and profound. Though he is little, Temba comes to understand he has a big God who loves
and cares for him. A fun and informative way to teach children about God's character and love.
A warm, loving story about
a shepherd willing to take a chance on an untrained, unmanageable, suspicious sheepdog. The shepherd cares for, reaches out
and guides the animal, who not only eventually responds, but also becomes what he was created to be—a valuable sheepdog.
Discussion questions at the
end of this short, six chapter book add depth to the story by showing parallels to how Jesus loves and cares for us. Great
for reading, for family devotions or in a classroom setting.
This is a big, beautifully
illustrated story of caring between an old, seeming homeless, woman and the youngsters she entertains with her recorder. While
she gives the kids the attention they so crave, they return the favor with a very special Christmas.
While this is a good read
for individual or family any time of the year, it makes an especially poignant Christmas offering. A story that could become
a family tradition.
This compilation of prayers has something for everyone. Even adults
will enjoy some of the sweet and classic expressions as well as the Scripture verses. Those expressions that may for some
not meet a need are easily skipped. Categories include: My World, My Day, Our World, Sad Days and Happy Days. This is a very
ecumenical and environmental friendly book of prayers geared for the younger set.
Kids have lots of questions
about the Bible. Rock asks some of these same questions: What is the Bible?, Are the Bible stories pretend or real?, Is Jesus
in the Bible? And many others. One of the answers: We read the Bible to learn
about Jesus and to learn to follow him. The answers provide opportunities for parents and grandparents, even teachers to share
their faith. The answers, which are also listed together at the end, can also help parents who struggle with their own answers.
A good book for adults and children to share and learn together.
This hardcover book retells the story of David and Goliath in a manner
sure to appeal to a child’s sense of story and adventure. The illustrations have a childlike quality that will draw
them into the world of David the shepherd boy who’s belief in God fells a giant and saves a nation.
Marzollo uses sheep frolicking along the page bottom to pose questions
and make comments, giving opportunities for parents to further discuss aspects and ramifications of the story.
Robert loved bears, bears of all kinds. He is excited when his mother
tells him he not only gets to be in his Aunt Jane’s wedding, but he also gets to be the ring “bear.” Of
course he expects something very different than the adults. What follows is a sweet story of a child’s perception of
an adult world.
While flower girls have their stories, few have taken the time to
tell the story of the little ring bearer. Sharp provides a sweet story, illustrated beautifully, that makes a great gift for
any young man—especially one who will be a ring “bear.”
Kids have lots of questions about God. Rock asks some of these same questions: Who is God?, How Old is God?, Has God
noticed the bad things in the world?, What does God do? And many others. The answers provide opportunities for parents and
grandparents, even teachers to share their faith. The answers can also help parents who struggle with their own answers. A
good book for adults and children to share and grow together.
This book tells two stories. It is a solid retelling of the Biblical story of Jonah with fun illustrations. It is also
the fictional story of the big fish that swallowed Jonah. This second story helps children appreciate how God not only made
them special just the way they are, but also that he has a plan and a purpose for each life. It is an interesting mix.
My only concern is that parents help the child understand the difference between real and make believe so the child
doesn’t also come to believe Bible stories are just stories, too.
Many of us have counted stars. In this fun children’s book,
Little Bear counts his blessings as he counts the stars.
The blessings you give me are like stars in the sky.
I couldn’t count all of them—hard as I try.
So tonight as I stargaze, I’ll just list these TEN.
For starters, thanks Lord, for my new whiskered friend.
This begins Little Bear’s star count down. As each page is turned
fewer stars show in the sky of this hard-back book with cutout, foil stars. This is not only a fun book to read to your little
ones, but also a good starting point to talk about being thankful for God’s blessings. This is a keeper.
This brightly illustrated hardcover book retells the story of Daniel
and the lions’ den with a little twist. The illustrations will appeal to children as they hear the story of Daniel told
simply and clearly.
What makes this book unique are the ants marching along the bottom
of each page asking questions such as Why DID the king pick Daniel? With the answers—He knows him. He likes him. Daniel’s
smart.
This book, while enjoyable for the story and picture, also opens up
opportunities to further explore the story through the ants’ questions. A fun and unique presentation of Daniel’s
story.
This book builds on a child’s need for the concrete. The illustrations
and text give substance to the concepts of a heavenly home as well as the fruit of the spirit.
The salvation message is made clear while taking the scary aspect
out of a far away place called Heaven. This book should be on the shelf of every parent trying to teach a young child about
Jesus and heaven. I can see this being used for the child who has or will soon lose a loved one, even for a terminally ill
child. Beautifully and sensitively done.
