JACKSON JONES: The Tale of a Boy, an Elf, and a Very Stinky Fish By
Jenn Kelly ISBN 978-0-310-72079-9 Zondervan Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
10 ½ year-old Jackson isn't too happy when his Great Aunt Harriett has
to sleep in his room during a family gathering. She has huge hair, a lisp and rather creeps him out. Still he has to be polite.
What he hasn't figured on was that during the night he would be having an adventure—in Great Aunt Harriett's hair. Go
figure. He hasn't figured on meeting special friends or learning something very special—his story. Will he have the
time to discover his story before night ends? Will he ever be the hero he so desires to be?
A goofy, Alice-In-Wonder type of story with lots of fun author intrusion
that doesn't seem like intrusion and characters that appeal to, well, 10 somethings.
I'm going to see what my 10 year-old grandson thinks of this book.

EXPLORE THE BIBLE STICKER BOOK By Tim Dowley ISBN 978-1-85985-818-9 Candle
Books Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
This book takes us back to Biblical times and, through, illustrations
and text, helps us to see and understand what was happening historically, what people wore and ate, how they lived and worked.
The stickers to be added are not small, but illustrations in themselves that give more color and depth to the book.
I've studied Biblical times and history and I still learned new things.
How much more will a younger person learn by going through this book, adding stickers and being drawn in to the world of the
Bible.
A valuable resource.
THE CASE FOR FAITH FOR KIDS By Lee Strobel with Rob Suggs and Robert
Elmer ISBN 978-0-310-71991-5 Zondervan: Zonderkidz Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
THE CASE FOR FAITH FOR KIDS deals with the questions: Why would a good
God allow bad things?; Does science mean miracles can't happen?; Can other religions get us into heaven and other questions.
In our increasingly hostile culture against Christianity, it is important
that our children know what they believe and why. This book provides answers in a way they can understand and with added story
applications. This book also answers questions for those still searching.
While this book is written for kids, THE CASE FOR FAITH FOR KIDS is a
great introductory for adults as well. Recommended for all families and churches.

THE CASE FOR A CREATOR FOR KIDS By Lee Strobel with Rob Suggs and
Robert Elmer ISBN 978-0-310-71992-2 Zondervan: Zonderkidz Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Media, Science shows, PBS, schools, books, etc. usually lean on the side
of evolution. Not any evolution, but evolution that excludes God—a first cause. It is a blindness against all reason
and scientific study and natural reason.
Can we really believe there is no intelligent design when we look at
the precision within our world and logic with which our world exists? Too much of this, too little of that, a micro change
and earth is history. Our bodies are wonderfully and marvelously made...and very complex. What about the Big Bang? What caused
that big explosion of matter and where did that matter come from?
In THE CASE FOR A CREATOR FOR KIDS, Strobel makes the case for the Creator
in a rational manner that appeals not only to kids, but to the adults as well.
A must for all Christian families, churches, libraries...as well as individuals
and schools that seek truth.

Who was Jesus? Was He a fake or fraud? Did He really die and rise again
or was His resurrection a hoax perpetrated by his followers? All these questions and more are answered in THE CASE FOR CHRIST
FOR KIDS. Like THE CASE FOR CHRIST for adults, this deals with those questions faced everyday from friends, teachers, media
and others.
Only this book makes the case in an easy to read and fun format. There
are even practical applications in stories built around concepts. To be honest, I might give this book instead of the adult
version to anyone, child or adult, who has questions, but little background in the Christian faith.
An absolute winner. All of our kids need to read this book...and it wouldn't
hurt for we adults to read it as well.

MY PAL, VICTOR Text: Diane Gonzales Bertrand Illustrations: Robert
L Sweetland ISBN 978-1-934960-84-4 Raven Tree Press Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Two friends do all sorts of fun things together. Victor watches his friend
play baseball. The boys love telling stories and jokes. Love to swim. They are best of friends. In the end, we learn that
Victor is in a wheelchair, but the friends accept each other just the way they are.
The end is an unexpected twist. I had to reread the story from the beginning
to see why I didn't pick up on the disability from the active, colorful illustrations. Amazing how illustrations help keep
the focus on the fun, not any disability—not until that last picture.
With the focus on fun and friendship, the reader realizes that limitations
don't need to keep someone from enjoying life. An important thing for those without limitations to learn.
A Spanish/English Version. A book for any home, school, church and library.

Aliens aren't little green men, they are right here with us in helmets

ALIEN INVADERS is a great way to introduce, in a non-threatening way,
all about spiders and ants and other insects. The humorous illustrations take us up close and personal with the “Alien
Invaders.”
An absolutely delightful book I can't wait to share with my grandsons—and,

My husband loves what I call “bad” humor. Those jokes that
make you groan. You have the idea. Some of the jokes in this book have been around the block a few times, others are
twists only a jokester's mind would come up with. Cartoon illustrations expand the humor. These are the sort of jokes told
and retold and passed on through children to grandchildren.
Though taken from Biblical situations, this is not a Book about spiritual
insights. It does show that Christians can have a sense of humor, too.
A gift for those who love word jokes.

THE AEDYN CHRONICLES: Chosen Ones By Alister McGrath ISBN 0-310-71812-3 Zondervan Reviewer
Carolyn R Scheidies
When Julia and her older brother Peter have to stay with their grandparents,
Julia is drawn to a strange garden with an even stranger story. Something or someone is calling to her. She flees, but when
Peter joins her in the garden, the pull becomes too strong.
Only then do they realize they've been drawn into another world—a
world where evil reigns. Why doesn't the wise old man want Julia to share what he tells her and why can't Peter truly see
the evil rulers for who they are? Can't he see beyond their facade of reason and “science” to their true purpose?
Will Julia succumb to the temptations presented or will she truly be one of the Chosen Ones?
Much like the Narnia series, THE AEDYN CHRONICLES is a journey into another
world where those from our world can make a real difference. Unlike the Narnia series, Peter isn't as traitorous as Edmund
and isn't turned back through sacrifice and forgiveness. Julia is touched by the Lord of Hosts and it changes everything.
A story of revelation, bravery, self-sacrifice and adventure.
The story flows smoothly, quickly entangling and capturing the reader,
not letting go until the story is satisfactorily wrapped up in the final pages. The story is complete, though there are hints
of further adventures. I'd like to read those further adventures.
A great book for elementary/tweens and early teens. (Even for some adults,
like me who like a good story and are Narnia fans.)

A story of secrets, betrayal, friendship and redemption. A continuation

PAUL'S TRAVELS Text Tim Dowley ISBN 978-0-8254-7383-8 Candle
Books: Kregel Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
PAUL'S TRAVELS takes us on a journey, getting to know Saul/Paul from
the Bible who wrote so many of the books. We follow him as he traveled the known world of his day. He was not always a Christian,
but his conversion was so dramatic it impacted his whole life, which he dedicated to sharing God's love with others.
PAUL'S TRAVELS shares the story in text bites interspersed with illustrations,
pictures, information about customs, culture and dress of the time period. The book is interesting and very readable. Among
the pages of the book are pages made as envelopes that contain letters, many from Paul. An interesting concept.
The drawback of these pages is that it does take a bit of dexterity and
patience to pull out the letters and re-insert them. One has to hold the page just right to make them slide in and out. I
wonder if elementary age children will have the patience to continue to put the letters back in the appropriate envelope.
My guess is that the letters will soon be separated from the book, and maybe lost.
(Note to parents. After the newness wears off, if you wish to keep the
letters with the book, fasten them to the envelope permanently.)
With that drawback, PAUL'S TRAVELS is a fun way to introduce someone,
child or adult, to a main character of the Bible.

This exciting children's story is
divided into short chapters for each day of Advent. All of Israel is looking for the Messiah, someone who will deliver them
from the tyranny of Rome.
Jotham is a ten-year-old shepherd boy who is angry at his father for not letting him
go with his older brothers to Hebron to sell some sheep, so he runs away and hides in the hills. He ignores the calls of his
family that evening, and spends a scary winter night in his scratchy blanket, then another, sure that his family will come
find him. But they don't. Searching his way back to the camp, he finds it deserted. And a makeshift grave of rocks covering
a bloodied tunic that had belonged to him. They must think he's dead. He must go and find them.
Jotham encounters
very real danger as he seeks his family. And a bright star in the night sky seems to be guiding him, as well as some astronomers
from the East, to a town near Jerusalem. But a band of evil men are hunting him down. It looks like he may never find his
family at all.
An exciting adventure that will engage children of all ages. There are even snippets of information
about the Jewish people at the end of each chapter, but I found them to be distracting. The story itself is complete enough.
I highly recommend this book.

LET'S TALK ABOUT ANGER By Carolyn B Anderson ISBN 978-1-59824-577-06 E-BookTime
LLC Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Sports figures rant and rage. Political leaders angrily tear down opponents.
Movies, TV and video games elevate rage and revenge to new levels. Yet such anger is anything but productive. Despite cultural
influences, God calls us to peace, to thinking before speaking and acting and to love instead of hate.
This book helps parents and young people understand what anger is, how
it hurts and how we can control it. The book has chapters on anger as an emotion, about how it opens the door to the Devil,
how it leads to mistakes and hurting others and, most important, how anger separates us from God and His will for us.
Chapters are short and geared for elementary on up with thoughtful questions
at the end of each one. This book deals with an important topic—self-control—in an era when negative emotions
cause untold problems and heartache. A book for parents and children to work through together, or a Sunday School class, or
a Bible Study discussion. Fills a definite need for today.

A HAPPY HEART Rachel Yoder—Always Trouble Somewhere By Wanda
E. Brunstetter ISBN: 978-1-60260-134-5 Barbour Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Amish Rachel enjoys her family, school and her cat Cuddles. What she
doesn't appreciate is being teased. When Rachel can't see the bird in the tree, the blackboard or the baseball, her mother
takes her to the eye doctor.
Her first delight over being able to see clearly with glasses disappears
under the barrage of teasing from her brother Jacob and a few other classmates. What Rachel does about her situation teaches
her a lesson in contentment and doing what is right no matter what.
Another targeted story about a young girl whose struggles aren't much
different from young people of her age from any culture.
Looking for positive books for your early to mid elementary-age child?
Get them started on this series. Could become addictive.
GROWING GREEN A Young Persons Guide to Taking Care of the Planet Text

It is good to help our children learn about our resources and the earth
and God's creation. It is good for them to learn that things don't always need to come from a store. In fact, growing plants
and reusing and restoring things can be fun as well as beneficial. While I don't buy into the Global Warming scenario, GROWING
GREEN can help kids look beyond selfish consumerism, making them aware that what they do effects others either for good or
bad.
The writing is simple and informative that, along with the soft-focused
illustrations, provides a positive teaching tool for parents and teachers.

Amish Rachel is all excited about two things, her grandfather's new greenhouse
and her birthday. Special things are planned, but put aside when Rachel's mom delivers her new little sister on, of all days,
Rachel's birthday. Extra house chores keeps Rachel from helping out much in the greenhouse and her birthday seems to have
been put on permanent hold.
Rachel feels left out and forgotten. But when she chooses to accept an
invitation to Hershey Park, an amusement park, without her parent's permission, Rachel discovers just how wrong a bad decision
can be when she gets separated from those who brought her. Along the way, Rachel learns a lesson is faith and contentment—and
just how much her family loves her.
Another Rachel story written just where kids are at and who will identify
with the situation, as well hopefully, the solution of faith and family.

Keoni has one burning question that no one seems able to answer to his

Read KEONI'S BIG QUESTION to discover the surprising answer.
The illustrations complete the text, taking us down the river and into
the heart of God. Despite the colorful illustrations, the amount and difficulty of the text takes this from a picture book
to a book more suited to middle elementary age.
It also leads the reader into finding the joy of knowing God.
A useful tool for Sunday School teachers and parents.

More than anything, Gustavo wanted to be a mariachi, but he couldn't
play the trumpet, the violin or anything else. He felt sad he couldn't join his family members in the band. One morning before
dawn he goes outside. Admiring the stars, the saguaros, the animals, he begins to sing. Every night he gains confidence as
he sings into the darkened sky, until he sings so loud everyone hears and cheers. He has found his instrument, his voice,
and becomes his heart's desire—a mariachi.
This book intermingles Spanish with the primarily English text. Most
of the time the Spanish is self-evident in the passage and there is a vocabulary list at the back for help. I found this more
difficult than the books that have the two languages completely separated.
However, I think, this too, is a good learning tool and the story is
worth the work to read--in both languages.

The Night of the Radishes is an annual festival of Oaxaca, Mexico where,
for a contest, sculptures are created from radishes. With this as a setting, RUNAWAY RADISH uses the format from the “Little
Gingerbread Man” to create a rollicking fun story about a radish who doesn't want to be part of a sculpture and runs
away with the repeated phrase “Places to go, people to see. Out of my way, you can't carve me!” Along the way
the radish causes all sorts of havoc until the sculptor captures him.
A fun story told in both Spanish and English that will elicit laughter
and the desire to read “just one more time!” A winner in either language.

Marco the Flamingo is curious about where the snowbirds come from. They
tell him it is cold and miserable and basically where he lives is paradise. But that isn't enough for Marco. One day he heads
North. Of course the implication is that he'll freeze and want to return to the warm South, but this beautifully illustrated
book takes a twist.
With more illustration than words, the readers/viewers of this book are
drawn into the joy Marco finds in skiing and skating and enjoying the cold North. Not only does he not freeze, he sends a
postcard not from the warm South to the cold North, but from the North to the South expressing his joy. While the whole book
elicits a smile the final twist, which I won't divulge, even more so. The text is in both Spanish and English with a vocabulary
list at the back.
A wonderful book to help children and adults learn bilingual skills and

BOOMTOWN Book 1 CHANG'S FIREWORKS FACTORY By Nowen N Particular ISBN
978-1-4003-1345-7 Thomas Nelson Reviewer Elisabeth H. Bantz
"I almost died today," it began. And it almost
did. After a painfully slow start in which I wondered how this adult was going to read the whole book, much less a child for
whom it was written, it took off with a bang on page fifteen, and continued the pace for 320 pages. Now my grandchildren want
to read it.
Rev. Button (Cute name!) is moving his family--wife, and three children ages 10, 13, and 16--from
California to a quiet town (he thinks) in Washington to spare them all the scariness of big city life. But what he soon faces
proves scarier still: most of his predecessors at the Boomtown church have died in fluke accidents. And while the wacky things
that occur almost daily seem to turn out for the best for his family, almost losing his life--many times over--does not endear
him to this booming town where everybody's favorite thing to do is blow stuff up. Not surprising, since Boomtown evolves around
Chang's Famous Fireworks Factory.
No overt spiritual content, but plenty of brotherly love, ethnic diversity,
and downright neighborliness, with tons of action and humor sprinkled in for good measure. It turned out to be a fun read
for this grandma, so I'd recommend it for children of all ages.

and discussions started between tweens and parents. Each chapter includes a verse, a quote, words to ponder, an application
story and more. This book can be used not only for individual devotions, but also for discussion groups, even Sunday Schools
could use this as the basis of lessons.
Even though I haven't been a tween for a long time, the subject matter
deals with things we all deal with regardless of our age—though the stories are geared for tweens. In fact, as I finished
ME, MYSELF AND I, I wished for a book in this format for adults.

ISLE OF FIRE By Wayne Thomas Batson ISBN 978-1-4003-1216-0 Thomas
Nelson Reviewer Elisabeth H. Bantz
Book two in an eighteenth century buccaneer series. Thankfully, there was
a list of cast members at the beginning for those of us who hadn't read the first book, but even then, it took a while for
me to figure out who was who and what was happening. The list of nautical terms was also helpful.
"Cat," the eighteen-year-old newly-appointed captain of one of the Brethren’s
ships, faces an enemy within as well as one without. But he is surrounded by friends who believe in him, including a reformed
pirate and his beautiful daughter, as he faces his worst nightmare. He must come to grips with a past he cannot remember as
he tracks down the world's worst pirate, Bartholomew Thorne, his own father.
This swash-buckling pirate sequel to ISLE OF SWORDS is intense. Good
and evil battle it out to the very end, and even then some evil escapes. Another sequel?
I, personally, felt this tale was too intense, but perhaps some may not.
Although the faith element is low, I'd let my grandsons read it.

When Rachel's best friend Mary moves away from their Amish community,
nothing will console her. Worse, a new girl takes Mary's desk at school and seems bent on making life miserable for Rachel.
But is Audra really hateful or does Rachel's unforgiving, sour attitude color the way she views the disasters that pile up?
Rachel begins to realize she isn't just not making new friends, her attitude
is separating her from her old friends as well as her family. Can she see beyond her hurt to learn lessons of forgiveness
and moving on?
Though Rachel does hang on to her sour disposition and “poor me”
attitude almost until the end, she does finally “get it.” A positive look at reconciliation, forgiveness and faith.

Sarah Sawyer
Geared toward younger children (ages 7-11), BELIEVING IN NARNIA explores
the biblical principles and parallels found in the characters, settings, and events of the CHRONICLES OF NARNIA series, explaining
them in a simple and straightforward manner.
The book consists of seven “keys” or sections, each one exploring
different aspects of the series—characters and creatures, important objects in the stories, and so on. Sprinkled throughout
each chapter are Scriptures, small quizzes, questions and answers, and fun graphics. At the end of each chapter, are questions
for the reader that are meant to cause children to delve into their own faith and consider their relationship with Jesus.
BELIEVING IN NARNIA uses the Narnia series as a springboard to share
with children biblical principles and invite them to go deeper in their relationship with Jesus. For those who have children
that enjoy the series, this book could provide an opportunity for discussion and consideration of the allegorical themes of
the series and how they relate to everyday life.

causes untold problems at home and at school. She's tired of her brother's teasing and of always goofing up. Through experiences

DARIA SOLVES A MYSTERY (1862) The Civil War Sisters in Time By
Norma Jean Lutz ISBN 978-1-59310-356-5 Barbour Publishing Reviewer Michelle Levigne
Especially relevant with current world events, Daria’s story takes
place in Cincinnati, OH during the Civil War. So many of the changes in her town and family parallel what military families
go through now: economic hardship, family members gone from home with long gaps in communication, threats of danger from unfriendly
forces, and questions about why God allows these things to happen.
Daria is on the verge of adulthood, and she doesn’t want to step
over the line. She’d rather play baseball than wear a hoop skirt and join the sewing circle to make linens for the military
hospital. But she does what she knows is necessary, and is surprised, even a little disturbed to learn she finds some satisfaction
in doing it. Her twin brother, Andrew, isn’t happy with the changes in his sister, and changes in how they both perceive
the world come between the twins at times.
A bit of danger and intrigue spice up the story and prove the twins’
courage and intelligence and their faith in God. I don’t want to give away too much of the story – you can read
that on the back cover blurb, anyway. I’m gladly giving this one to my 11-year-old niece, and plan to find the other
books in the series for her. For those who follow the American Girl books, this will dovetail nicely with glimpses of history
through the eyes of young girls.

THE COMIC BOOK BIBLE Text & Illustrations by Rob Suggs ISBN 978-1-57747-143-0 Barbour
Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
When I was little I loved a Bible in comic book format that brought the Word of God to life.
THE COMIC BOOK BIBLE has the potential to do the same for young readers. The illustrations are colorful and each chapter/story
is tied with am appropriate Bible Verse. This was a huge endeavor and as any work of this size, sometimes little things creep
in, mistakes not caught in the editing process that parents should be aware of when buying this book.
Pg. 61. In the Samson story it shows Samson pulling down the temple with his head still shaved.
However, by the time that happened, his hair had grown back and God's favor once more rested upon him.
Pg 203-205. A bit confusing about who and how many disciples betrayed Jesus.
A couple of others places have been edited down to shade the story differently than scripture
might have intended. Still, this is a valuable resource for parents in sharing Biblical stories, message and context. As they
become acquainted with Scripture, parents can more easily move them on to a regular Bible. A good book to share at night before
bed.

and so much more. The stories are captured with catchy titles, and think about “what to do” questions at the end
of each scenario, as well as “Trading Places” questions. The book is buttressed with a section at the end about
bullying, statistics and what can be done.
This is a book best used in a discussion situation. It is written to help students “see”
themselves and others and to give them a chance to think through their response and how it will effect those around them.
An excellent resource for parents and teachers.

LYDIA THE PATRIOT (1770) The Boston Massacre Sisters
in Time By Susan Martins Miller ISBN 978-1-59310-204-3 Barbour Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
It is a heady time for America. Britain is pressuring the
colonies and Americans are tired of being taxed, pushed around and not adequately represented in the British government system.
As the colonists begin to organize and seek other solutions, the British government sends troops.
It all comes to a head in Boston in a stand off between
British soldiers and angry colonists. While no one really knew how it all came about the result was British soldiers firing
on the gathered crowd, leaving several dead. The Patriots and the Loyalists viewed what happened in very different ways, leaving
families divided.
Twelve year old Lydia is quick to take the side of her
older Patriot brother, quick also to say and do things without thinking getting herself and her younger, more thoughtful brother,
in harms way. Will Lydia's faith help her make wise decisions?
LYDIA THE PATRIOT deals with the Boston Massacre with a
good story and with balance, while capturing the excitement and danger of the times.
KATE AND THE SPIES (1775) The American Revolution Sisters in Time By JoAnn A Grote ISBN
978-1-59310-354-5 Barbour Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Kate wasn't sure whether she was a Loyalist like her parents or a Patriot like her cousin
and his family. But when things heat up, Kate makes decisions she never thought to make, discovers resources she never knew
she had and finds family and faith deeper than she thought possible.
Told from a thoughtful, balanced point of view, this story brings together the elements that
fermented a revolution with interesting characters and a plot that draws in and holds the reader.
History the way it should be shared.
THE MANDIE COLLECTION Vol. One Five Novels in One By Lois Gladys Leppard ISBN 10: 0-7642-0446-7 ISBN
13: 978-0-7642-0446-3 Bethany House Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
When her father dies, Mandie begins a journey that leads her from
the mountains to a world and a family she never knew existed. Each step is fraught with danger as Mandie discovers her Cherokee
heritage even as she enters into a world of culture and wealth.
The Mandie books begin coming out when my children were pre-schoolers.
We began reading the books together as they were released until my children were too busy with school activities in those
later elementary, early middle school years.
Together we laughed and cried with Mandie as she took us on adventure
after adventure. As I read this collection of the first five books, I realized how much I'd forgotten about the girl who gave
my children a positive model of Christianity—not perfect, but trusting in a big God.
I highly recommend this book to a new generation—books parents
and children can share together. I know my daughter-in-law plans to introduce Mandie to our grandchildren. I can't wait.
REBEKAH IN DANGER (1621) Peril at Plymouth Colony Sisters
in Time By Colleen L Reece ISBN 978-1-59310-352-1 Barbour Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Rebecca and her younger brother were more than happy to
get off the crowded ship that brought they to the new land. But they did not expect the cold, the fear, the illness, the hard
work just to survive or the death. But what they learned about life, God's grace and the kindness of the native Indians helps
them grow not only physically but also spiritually.
A positive story of America's past. If I were teaching
history, I'd be pushing this whole series of books that bring history to life for tweens.
GRACIE GANNON: MIDDLE SCHOOL ZERO By
Mary Elizabeth Anderson ISBN 978-0-9797772-0-2 Cloonfad Press Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Gracie's father lost his prestigious job and
the family has moved to smaller home in a different part of town. The friends she's grown up with turn their backs on her
and say cruel things to her and behind her back. That is just the beginning for sixth grader Gracie Gannon in what could have
been a no good, very bad year.
Despite all the bad things that happen to and
around her, Gracie reaches out and discovers that friendship means being there for the bad times as well as the good.
And, despite the absence of computers and cell
phones that so impact today's kids and a very light touch with faith, this is a story that will hit close to home for the
tween who feels out of sync with her world. An upbeat story with a positive message that while not everything can be fixed,
we can meet life with confidence and compassion.
WHEN MOTHER WAS ELEVEN-FOOT-FOUR Text Jerry Camery-Hoggatt Illustrations Mark Elliot ISBN 10:0-8007-1836-4 ISBN
13: 978-0-8007- 1836-7 Revell Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Mother wasn't very big, and her son didn't understand how she could say that sometimes she wasn't four foot
eleven, but eleven feet four. He didn't understand until their home was torn apart and the life he'd known became a struggle.
One Christmas he learned that it was all about being tall on the inside and that came from learning to give. A sweet Christmas
memory the family can share together.
IN JESSE'S SHOES Appreciating Kids with Special Needs Text Beverly Lewis Illustrations Laura
Nikiel ISBN 10: 0-7642-0313-4 ISBN 13: 978-0-7642-0313-8 Bethany House Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Jesse is wired differently from other kids and, though his sister Allie loves him, she is also sometimes
embarrassed by his actions. He's older, but acts younger than her. But the day she actually walks in his shoes, she also knows
just what to say to those who've been making fun of Jesse and her.
A story that brings us face-to-face with those who are different, a story that shows us everyone is special—even
those like Jesse—because we've all been created by God. A great beginning to help others understand and accept those
who are different.
HIS MIGHTY WARRIOR Treasured Letters From Your King By Sheri Rose
Shepherd ISBN 978-1-60142-034-3 Multnomah Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
In our culture, we tend to over-protect even our little boys. In doing
so, we keep them from becoming the protectors, the warriors, the men, God created them to be. In a series of letters from
God, with scripture and prayer for each, the author helps little boys learn how to be strong, yet tender as they learn the
true meaning of becoming Godly warriors.
Your young man will want to read each day's passage geared just
for them with treasure-hunting illustrations (ships and islands, spy-glasses and swords, parrots and frogs) to draw them to
the page. A great way to instill daily devotions into young boys.
MEGHAN ROSE HAS ANTS IN HER PANTS Text Lori Z Scott Illustrations Stacy Curtis ISBN 10: ISBN 13: 978-0-7847-2105-6 Standard
Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
More than anything else Meghan, who is a very bouncy first grader, wants a pair of “K-K-K-Kangaroozies!” to
wear on her feet. She saw the commercial and can't get it out of her head. She wants the Kangaroozies so she can bounce high,
high, high. Only while her friend gets a pair, Meghan's Mom says no. Meghan, of course, has a plan...or plans. She earns money
by selling Spuddy Buddys, but it isn't near enough. She makes stilts, but scares a cat. No matter what she does, nothing gets
her closer to bouncing high all on her own or to getting those Kangaroozies.
Her friend says pray. Her mother says wait. Bouncy Meghan Rose learns some valuable lessons about faith and patience
in this second in the Meghan Rose series. A fun book the whole family can enjoy together.
MEGHAN ROSE ON STAGE Text Lori Z Scott Illustrations Stacy Curtis ISBN 13: 978-0-7847-2103-2 Standard
Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
The school teacher announces tryouts for a talent show, 1st grader Meghan disparately wants to share her
talent. Only what talent does she have? She can't play the piano, or sing or bounce basketballs. In her search, Meghan discovers
that while she might not have a usual talent, she has one and it is dynamite.
MEGHAN ROSE ON STAGE is a fun, “bouncy” story of a young girl exploring important concepts of
worth, talent and jealousy as well as a God who cares enough to answer prayer. A winner for the younger set.
Next month we'll review another Meghan Rose book.
Full disclosure: I do not come to this book cold. I've seen early versions of the story as Lori perfected
it with our writer's group. We always knew she had lots of talent (she's also an illustrator in her own right) and I am thrilled
to present this first book in her series for Standard.

It is difficult to mix cultures when one
doesn’t fully understand the language of the other. However, in this story a grandson goes to stay with his Spanish
speaking Abuela (grandmother). They learn the language of love doesn’t need words, but an effort to do so helps both
know the joy of communicating with words as the experience bonds them together. Told in both English and Spanish this book
incorporates Spanish words in the English and English words in the Spanish translations giving each the power to assist in
learning the language.
The book is geared to those who already
have a working knowledge of the basics and pronunciation of Spanish and English and would work in a home or classroom setting.
However, for those who do not have the rudiments of the languages, I wonder if it would have helped to have a pronunciation
guide for both languages in the back.
Still this colorful book is a fun
as well as an informative way to integrate language and culture.

MANNERS MATTER for STUDENTS
By Fred Hartley & Andrea Hartley Smith
ISBN 978-1-59789-306-0
Barbour Publishing $9.97
I can see the eyes rolling when the word MANNERS comes up, but manners are simply a way of showing others you care
about and respect them—and they, you. I certainly don’t want someone belching in my face. What about those moments
when you are introducing someone or being introduced and your mind freezes because you don’t know what to say or do?
What about eating out and the unexpected happens? How do you deal with the situation? Manners are the key. Learning and practicing
some basic manners keeps us from looking like complete dorks in front of others.
Manners aren’t just for your parents or other adults. Manners are fundamental to positive social interactions.
Unfortunately, we don’t emphasize manners much, leaving our young people twisting in the wind in social situations.
(Sometimes this is because mom and dad haven’t learned them either.)
This book in a larger print, lots of white space, easy to read format hits the teen where they live—those social
situations that terrify and petrify. From hygiene to dating, this book helps the student confidently deal with personal and
social situations with confidence.
I’d like to see parents and youth groups go through this book with their kids. A real must for today’s
teens—and their parents.
